FragmentHSD (Edition) - Jeewi Lee x Phillip C. Reiner

Fragment” represents a continuation of Jeewi Lee’s engagement with sand as material, element, and concept, extending her investigation beyond the hyper-enlarged sculptural works into the realm of printmaking and edition art. Following her latest project of sculptures depicting enlarged grains of sand produced in collaboration with geometry researcher Phillip C. Reiner, this screenprint edition zooms into the microscopic viewpoint of single-grain sculptures, here depicted through prints incorporating actual sand particles. Each work depicts a single grain of sand from Popenguine, Senegal, while being comprised of a multitude of grains, creating a paradoxical unity where subject and material become one. The edition explores sand’s inherent contradictions as simultaneously one of Earth’s most abundant materials and an increasingly scarce resource due to construction demands and digital technology requiring silicon. The work examines both individual and collective nature of the material, reflecting how each grain carries personal history while participating in larger geological and human narratives, demonstrating how the microscopic can reveal universal truths about materiality, memory and interconnectedness across time and geography
